Southampton v Vitesse – Europa League 30 July 2015

Ronald Koeman’s Southampton played so well in the Dutchman’s first season as manager that they threatened to finish in the top-four at times. In the end, however, the Saints ran out of steam and finished in seventh places, behind Tottenham and Liverpool, respectively. Southampton finished second only to Chelsea for defensive performance, conceding just 33 goals.

Following Man City’s win of the League Cup and Arsenal’s clinching of the FA Cup, Southampton’s seventh-place finish was enough to qualify for the Europa League qualifying rounds. A win against Vitesse Arnhem on Thursday evening will set them up to advance to the main tournament itself.

Expectations

Koeman is extremely familiar with Vitesse from his time as a player and coach in the Netherlands’ Eredivisie, which is unquestionably weaker than the Premier League. Vitesse managed a fifth-place finish in the league last season and have never actually won the competition in the entirety of their history. This is Southampton’s game to lose, make no mistake about it.

Vitesse is a team devoid of stars. Chelsea fans will recognise the on-loan duo of midfielder Nathan and forward Isiah Brown, plus a couple of others, but the remainder of the squad is largely filled out by unrecognisable players. But Vitesse have played quite well over the last five preseason games, winning three and drawing two.

Southampton far exceeded expectations after the exodus they endured in summer 2014. A year later and classy midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has also left the club, as has fullback Nathaniel Clyne. Koeman will attempt to introduce Jordy Classie in midfielder and Cédric Soares at right-back. However, time will be required for each to fully gel.

The Saints lost friendlies against Leipzig, Valencia, and Salzburg before finding their rhythm to win against Groningen, Q. 20, and Feyenoord. Signs would suggest that Southampton are practiced enough to win their first home game of the season against who amount to weaker opponents.

Vitesse have conceded heavily preseason, letting in eight during five games. Southampton should be able to unlock their defence.
