Premier League Prediction – Everton v Man Utd

It’s always tough to call the opening games of the Premier League campaign, which begins in earnest this coming Saturday afternoon. You can guarantee there will be at least one game that is over-flowing with goal-mouth action; whether this is due to an exuberant newly promoted team or a blistering performance by one of the established top six.

I have a feeling that the Monday night match between Everton and Manchester United will produce an Over 2.5 goal result. David Moyes’ Toffeemen surrendered meekly to United last October, in a drab 1-0 defeat at Goodison Park. Moyes must surely have realised that his far more cavalier approach to the game at Old Trafford in April, when the two sides played out a thrilling 4-4 draw, and Everton attacked the Red Devils without any fear from the first whistle, is the way to go to get the Goodison crowd roaring and Everton off to a flying start for once.

There is some extra spice to this fixture, as always, with the return of Wayne Rooney yet again to his spiritual home. This time around he will aided by his new strike partner Robin Van Persie, forming what could be one of the deadliest duo’s in European football and certainly one of the most astute transfer coup’s of the summer.

There is also something about the first televised evening game of the PL calendar; the atmosphere will be electric with anticipation, magnified by the obvious regional rivalry between Scousers and Mancunians. Rooney’s every touch will be booed vociferously but this only fuels his desire to score.

Everton possess a goal-machine themselves in the Croatian forward, Nikica Jelavic. A rangy target man with a great touch who is always connecting with first-time finishes in the penalty area because of his clever movement and excellent positioning. His goals (9 in 13 appearances) helped Everton move up the table to a respectable 7th position after he was acquired from Rangers in January. He also scored twice in the aforementioned 4-4 draw at Old Trafford, the last time these two clubs met.
