The sole Welsh representatives of the Premier League, Swansea City, will continue their excellent season with a home match at the Liberty stadium against visitors, Everton, on Saturday afternoon.

Brendan Rodgers’ stock is rising within the football management world; as Swansea have secured their Premier League status by producing an attractive brand of possession football, using virtually an entire squad of Championship (lower league) players.

At home, they keep hold of the ball so well that the opposition can struggle to create any chances; so when you consider the defensive and reactive style of Everton’s manager, David Moyes, it’s difficult to see there being many goals in this match. A look at Everton’s recent away form (below) would illustrate this.

Everton: Away Games Played, since Dec 2011

Arsenal 1 0 Everton 10/12/2011
Sunderland 1 1 Everton 26/12/2011
W.B.A. 0 1 Everton 01/01/2012
Tottenham 2 0 Everton 11/01/2012
Aston Villa 1 1 Everton 14/01/2012
Wigan 1 1 Everton 04/02/2012
Q.P.R. 1 1 Everton 03/03/2012
Liverpool 3 0 Everton 13/03/2012

The embarrassing capitulation to bitter rivals Liverpool and the 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday night should spur a resolute and spirited reaction from Everton at the Liberty stadium.

Their naturally cautious approach usually produces matches that are short on goalmouth incidents, 5 out of their last 6 games (home and away) have ended in an under 2.5 goal result.

Swansea’s patient, passing style and Everton’s deep defensive line will mean we are likely to see long periods of Swansea possession with not much penetration or goal-scoring opportunities.

The “Swans” have only conceded an average of 0.7 goals per game at home this season, whilst the travelling “Toffees” have struggled to find the net away from Goodison Park, scoring on average 0.9 per game.

A gritty 1-1 draw or a narrow win for Swansea seems the most likely outcome on Saturday, especially when we analyse the two sides’ low scoring performances over the previous 20 games of the current campaign (below).
