With just 8 games remaining in the English Premier League, the fight for survival, the race for the title and the battle for European qualification are still all up for grabs.

This week we’ll be focusing on the latter point, as Newcastle and Liverpool go head to head at the Sports Direct Arena (formerly St James Park) on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle’s 8 point lead over Liverpool (they lie 6th and 7th in the table respectively) and joint tally with Chelsea has kept the Geordie supporters dreaming of the Champions League, in what has been an excellent campaign for the North East club. Conversely, the expensively assembled Liverpool squad will be disappointed on missing out on the Champions League again, and must lower their expectations towards the more realistic ambition of Europa League qualification.

These two historic clubs have had some entertaining goal-fests over the last 20 years, a trend that

has continued in their previous 6 league meetings (below).

As we can see, all their encounters have been over 2.5 goals with Liverpool scoring at least 3 times on 5 out of the 6 occasions.

Liverpool have also been involved in relatively high scoring games in recent weeks, as 5 out of their last 6 matches have ended in an over 2.5 goal result.

In fact, if we dissect Liverpool’s previous 20 league games we’ll find that the most popular results have been involving 3 goals being scored in total in the match (below).

Newcastle’s highly rated top goal scorer, Demba Ba, is currently 4th in the Premier League goal scoring charts with 16 goals. His Senegalese compatriot, Papiss Cisse, has also scored 5 goals in his first 5 appearances for the club since joining the Magpies in the January transfer window.

Cisse, who cost a modest £9m, and Ba (a free transfer) are nearing the peak of their careers (both are 26 years old) and seem to already have formed a lethal strike partnership.

Liverpool will be relying on the craft and guile of £23 million pound Uruguayan striker, Luis Suarez, undoubtedly one of the most fascinating and skilful players in Europe.  Along with their talismanic captain, Steven Gerrard, they have been Liverpool’s two best players by some distance; their intuitive understanding on the pitch has been Liverpool’s most dangerous weapon this season.
