The highly unpopular Aston Villa boss, Alex McLeish, faces his old mentor, Sir Alex Ferguson, at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon as his struggling Villa outfit take on Manchester United.

Just over half of Villa’s games this season have ended in an under 2.5 goal result; a statistic indicative of the dourly defensive football that has so enraged the Villa fans for the past nine months.
The average goal ratio in the Premier league has been steadily dropping in the last few weeks as we approach what Alec Ferguson has coined “squeaky bum time”, referring to the increased pressure on teams at both ends of the table.

Villa have a very precarious point’s total of 35, and are still not assured of safety, especially when you consider there consistently low scoring rate for the entirety of the campaign. More pertinently, they’ve only managed 3 away goals since the beginning of February.

After Man Utd’s 1-0 defeat to Wigan on Wednesday night and Man City’s thumping win over West Brom, the pressure is on for the Red Devils to get all 3 points from this game, but with Villa also desperate for points, this encounter could be a very tight one.

Villa’s stubbornly defensive set-up can be difficult to break down, and Man Utd’s recent home form has been efficient yet miserly; Luis Suarez’s 80th minute strike on the 11th February is the only goal the Champions have conceded at home in their previous 6 matches (below).

Man. Utd. : Home games since mid-January

Man. Utd. 3 0 Bolton 14/01/2012
Man. Utd. 2 0 Stoke 31/01/2012
Man. Utd. 2 1 Liverpool 11/02/2012
Man. Utd. 2 0 W.B.A. 11/03/2012
Man. Utd. 1 0 Fulham 26/03/2012
Man. Utd. 2 0 Q.P.R. 08/04/2012

As we can see, United’s last 3 home games have all ended in an under 2.5 goal result without them conceding a goal. In fact, apart from the loss at Wigan, United have not conceded a goal in their previous 6 games, home and away (below).

Man. Utd : Last 6 games

Wigan 1 0 Man. Utd. 11/04/2012
Man. Utd. 2 0 Q.P.R. 08/04/2012
Blackburn 0 2 Man. Utd. 02/04/2012
Man. Utd. 1 0 Fulham 26/03/2012
Wolves 0 5 Man. Utd. 18/03/2012
Man. Utd. 2 0 W.B.A. 11/03/2012

In April of last season, 3 of Manchester United’s 4 games were all under 2.5 goals, with both of the home matches crucially ending in an under 2.5 goal result.

Of course, there is always the possibility of a Wayne Rooney (United have been over-reliant on him this season, with no other player coming close to his tally of 22 goals in 28 starts) hat-trick to ruin the prediction, but I think we can at least rely on Villa to not score: top scorer, Gabby Agbonlahor has a meagre 5 goals from 28 starting appearances.
