England v Estonia – Euro 2016 Qualifying 9 Oct 2015

Roy Hodgson has enjoyed a comfortable Euro 2016 qualifying campaign, beating all challengers thus far. The 68-year-old manager let down the hopes of a nation when his England side failed to make it out of the group stages at the 2014 World Cup, so fans have welcomed the good performances. A win against Estonia would give England the chance to win all of their qualifying games.

Expectations

England are going to take this game seriously, with Hodgson having announced that he will be more likely to experiment in their next away game against Lithuania. This will mean that familiar names like Wayne Rooney, James Milner, and Michael Carrick are likely to appear on the team-sheet.

Between now and Euro 2016, Hodgson has a lot of decisions to make about his team. Injury prone players like Jack Wilshere and Daniel Sturridge have forced him to reconsider his ideal line-up. England have a nasty habit of not playing a consistent first XI ahead of major tournaments.

England are likely to deliver a more convincing result than the 1-0 score-line they put up against Estonia last October. Having an in-form Theo Walcott will give them the chance to stretch Estonia’s backline and create openings for Raheem Sterling to exploit.

Estonia have played surprisingly well in defence, conceding on six goals. Even though Group E is incredible weak, it is still impressive that they have only been broken down on six occasions. On Friday night, though, they will have their toughest challenge in travelling to London.

Expect Estonia to do nothing but sit back and defend, considering how they have scored only four goals in eight qualifying games. England defence will have almost nothing to worry about. In the past, there would be a risk of England being bogged down by a defensive team like Estonia, but the pace of England’s attacking players will be a major help.
